The CUPI Story

In 1994, with over 15 years of employee benefit experience, Patti Tuma quickly found herself disenchanted with an industry that did not mirror her ‘thinking outside the box’ philosophy or emphasis she placed on custom solutions when it came to designing employee benefit plans. The benefit industry – as a whole – seemed more concerned with bottom lines and ‘sterile’ sales tactics, rather than trying to understand the unique needs, goals and objectives of each client. It was sales for the sake of selling. Armed with the conviction that she wanted to put the ‘SERVICE’ back into the service industry, and the belief that each client had unique needs, Benefits Unlimited, Inc. (BUI) (now a division of Gallagher Benefit Services, Inc.) was created.

It was through the desire to help fill some common HR needs among her existing BUI clients that CU People, Inc. (CUPI) was founded in 2000. As a natural progression of value-added services, CUPI would be an outlet to provide HR expertise to those clients who did not necessarily have the time or resources to devote to those functions – freeing them up to concentrate on day-to-day operations and strategic planning. Outsourcing functions like HR compliance/administration and payroll services became a cornerstone to building a successful business model. Through CUPI’s value-added services, companies can realize improved data integrity, streamlined HR processes, and eased HR administrative burdens – all of which allows businesses to re-focus their efforts and concentrate on improving their bottom line!

Fast forward to today…With over 30 years of experience and industry knowledge in employee benefits, Patti has become a recognized leader and employer advocate in the benefits and HR industry. To date, BUI/CUPI have over 150 Texas partners with area locations in:
